This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.
Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like standard biological terror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.
A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The story starts when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
The couple face the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
